When designing the artwork and sequence of images to depict these themes, we had our work cut out for us. How explicit could we be to show the gravity of the subject matter? How are we able to create situations people can relate to, without feeling triggered or overwhelmed?
The stories in these books are based on thousands of hours of clinical work with veterans. While protecting the privacy of individual experiences, general themes that commonly arise have been identified, and put into picture form. These are the stories common to people who've been overseas, done the work, and suffered the consequences. We have developed characters, plot-lines and details that are consistent with authentic military experiences.
Perhaps more importantly, we've given our characters realistic problems, symptoms, and solutions.
Aesthetically we've done this in a stylized manner so that the images aren’t shocking or distressful. We are aware that our audience could potentially find this material challenging. We don't shy away from it, but address this relevant, and sometimes awkward subject matter in a non-threatening and engaging manner. It is our goal to address these issues, not exacerbate them. After all, our products are about overcoming personal obstacles, and healing. |
It is with this in mind that our designers craft artwork that conveys not just the story, but also a subtext of healing and recovery.
